Part of the 1st Grade science curriculum is learning about soil, rocks, sand, and silt, and the water retention of soils. We decided to have them get some hands-on experience with soil by helping to harvest, weed, and prep some of our garden beds.
First we talked about soils and looked at comparisons between the soil in the beds and in the regular ground. After we explained our plan, we showed them which leaves were vegetables to harvest and which were weeds.
We had lots of good stuff to donate! (We donate to Plant a Row for the Hungry). After everything was harvested they spent some glorious spring outside time weeding and weeding and weeding. They loved it, and I loved watching all those weeds be pulled by 100 tiny hands instead of my own 2 🙂
